Our Therapeutic Model
All aspects of the program utilize a broad-based therapeutic approach that moves beyond only treating symptoms to dealing with the root causes of chemical dependency and behavioral issues, so that change can be long lasting and will prepare them to return and contribute positively to their school, home, and community. The faith-based, friendly environment will encourage teens to choose to enter into their own relationship with God.
Student counseling and education generally involve the integration of principles from various psychological disciplines and with varying philosophical underpinnings.
Each client is specially assigned to the caseload of a Lakeside on-site Counselor. Along with individual and group counseling, this Counselor is also responsible to ensure a smooth delivery of all services to the student and family. The counselor is the point of contact for the family, available to answer questions and give updates on the students progress.
Group counseling occurs on a regular basis. This time is utilized to allow students an opportunity to grapple with and resolve commonly faced issues. Students learn to constructively express their thoughts, ideas, and questions in an environment where each member is accepted and respected. Group counseling is not utilized to scrutinize individual members or to glorify past poor decisions.
We Discourage Negative Behavior…Encourage Good
At Lakeside, the teen is given feedback at regular intervals throughout the day and at the end of the day. Healthy choices in behavior will be rewarded and unhealthy choices will not be rewarded. Regardless of a “good or bad” day, each boy will be affirmed and encouraged by loving, positive staff, throughout this process.
Our Model of Behavioral Training
We teach the boys via individual and group counseling and also by experiential learning through the adventure training, trips, modeling and role playing, assistance and encouragement from staff to get back on track. Boys are encouraged to try again, not give up, when conflict happens. Our staff call out and activate the boy’s personal empowerment style.
We have had many clients that entered the program with serious drug issues and behavioral difficulties that completed high school and then attended and graduated college. We have former clients who now support the program financially, are happily married and in great careers.
Family Involvement in Therapy
Family will be required to be committed to involvement in family meeting sessions (onsite, phone conference, Skype – depending on where the parent(s) reside), Parents are asked to attend periodic Family Transformation Weekends, and there will be monthly updates from the Program Manager. We see the parents as allies and participants in the healing process, but sometimes parents need help to better communicate with their child, so we will provide such training. The every other month Family Transformation Weekends will include teaching, group/discussion time, an activity and pass along with structured fun/large group family activities.
Our Awesome Therapy Aftercare Program
The goal of our Aftercare Program is the successful reintegration back into the client’s family, school, and community. Many therapeutic programs across the country say “Goodbye” to the students when they leave, and never connect with them again. We feel this is short-sighted, and many of those kids fall off track without ongoing encouragement. That’s why we check back with graduates every other week for the first month, and each month for up to six months to help them along and give them encouragement. We also prepare them to go back home and for their future life. We provide life management skills for the boy, like money management (checks, banks, savings), and teach them how to make effective resumes. We also help them formulate education plans and make future goals.
There is no additional charge for Aftercare Program. Alumni will also be welcome to attend any of the Family Transformation Weekends to get a refresher course and encouragement.
